Periodontal Care
Smyrna GA

Our doctors at Reich Dental Center are your most reliable experts when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases.

Infections in the gums, the alveolar or tooth-bearing bone, and the periodontal ligament are all categorized under periodontal diseases. The key cause of these diseases is the infection-causing plaque.

Gingivitis is the mild form of periodontal infection and the initial stage for periodontitis and acute or advanced periodontitis.

If you come to our Smyrna, GA clinic with inflamed and bleeding gums, we will most likely diagnose you with gingivitis.

But symptoms such as loose teeth and gum recession will give our expert the signal that your gum disease has progressed to a more serious condition.

What is Periodontal Treatment?

We provide periodontal care in line with the manifesting symptoms.

If your gums are bleeding or you have bad breath and swelling, we treat you for gingivitis by performing a thorough dental cleaning.

We may also prescribe an antibiotic, an antimicrobial mouth rinse or doxycycline enzyme depressants to suppress the growth of destructive enzymes in your mouth.

When your gum disease has progressed to periodontitis, we propose periodontal maintenance procedures that help repair your gums.

This is done in two phases commonly known as scaling and planing.

Scaling involves a full dental cleaning that eliminates plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. During the planing process, our expert smoothens the roughened area of your tooth root to allow your gums to reconstruct and reattach to the tooth.

Surgical Treatment for Periodontal Disease

If periodontal disease has eaten too much into your tooth root, our periodontist will consider this an advanced case of periodontitis and will recommend a surgical intervention known as bone grafting. This involves placing a natural or synthetic bone where the bone is lost. We may also inject tissue-stimulating proteins to aid the regeneration of root tissues.

We recommend gum grafting when the gum tissue is badly damaged. When this is the case, our periodontist reinforces the thinned gum by harvesting skin tissue from the palate and attaching it where gum tissue is consumed or thinned.

When gum recession creates pockets and exposes your tooth root, our periodontist will surgically flip the gum and clean the pockets to remove calculus deposits. The specialist will then suture the gum back to its usual position to cover the roots of your teeth.

If occlusal issues have resulted from gum disease, our periodontist will work with our orthodontist to repair your gums and jaw. Occlusal issues are about misaligned teeth and manifest in overbites, underbites or crossbites. The surgical intervention, in this case, may mean opening your gum and realigning your jaw to its correct position. Mild teeth misalignment may, however, be corrected with wearing occlusal appliances like braces.
