Dentures
New dentures may feel awkward or uncomfortable for the first few weeks or even months. Eating and speaking with dentures might take a little practice. A bulky or loose feeling is not uncommon, while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold your dentures in place. Excessive saliva flow, a feeling that the tongue does not have adequate room, and minor irritation or soreness are also not unusual. If you experience irritation, see your dentist.
Immediate dentures:
- Avoid taking out denture the first 24 hours. The first time they are taken out is by the dentist. If the dentures are taken out the tissue can swell and dentures will not fit. This could be weeks to months until they will fit again.
- Saliva and blood mix together making it appear like there is a lot of blood but this is normal.
- Stay on a soft diet for first few days and gradually work you way into harder foods. Do not over do it.
- Do not use adhesives or denture creams until dentist approves them. They can prolong healing time.
