Sedation/ Elective Treatments

  • What are the advantages of nitrous oxide?

    • It works rapidly ensuring relaxation and pain-killing properties work faster for complex dental procedures
    • The administrator of the gas can control the sedation level with ease depending upon the phase of the procedure
    • The exact time span it needs to be given for can be determined accurately
    • Rarely a hangover effect is experienced as the gas is eliminated from the body within 3 to 5 minutes after supply is stopped
      • No injection is required to administer it
      • It is very safe relative to administering other forms of drugs
      • It can minimize severe gagging

  • Oral sedation is a great options for patients who have a phobia, prior bad dental experiences, or anxious patients. Most commonly, oral sedation (usually in the form of anti-anxiety pills) is prescribed for relieving anxiety in the hours immediately before a dental appointment. An anti-anxiety or a sleeping pill taken the night before the appointment, an hour before going to bed, can help with staying relaxed.
The way anti-anxiety medication works is by decreasing anxiety by binding with receptors in the brain which tone down activity in those parts of the brain responsible for fear.
Travel warning! An absolute requirement for this type of medication is having a driver. This medication is very strong and driving is not only dangerous for you but for all others on the road.
  • Aromatherapy simply means the application of fragrant oils. Aromatherapy doesn’t just work through the sense of smell alone, however. Inhalation is only one application method. Essential oils can also be applied to the skin. When used topically, the oils penetrate the skin, taking direct action on body tissues and organs in the vicinity of application. They also enter the bloodstream and are carried throughout the body. Of course, when applied topically the fragrance of the essential oil is also inhaled.
There are three different modes of action in the body: pharmacological, which affects the chemistry of the body; physiological, which affects the ability of the body to function and process; and psychological, which affects emotions and attitudes. These three modes interact continuously making the oils very effective.
