Botox is used get rid of deep and fine wrinkles of the face, especially crow’s feet (wrinkles around your eyes), frown lines (between the eyebrows), horizontal forehead wrinkles, brow lifts (nonsurgical brow lift), masseteric hypertrophy (for those with wider faces), and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating from axillary areas).

What Can I expect?

You and your physician will evaluate your face and determine the areas where botox will be injected to obtain desired effects. You may prep from the pain using ice cubes or lidocaine ointment, although these are optional. The areas to be injected are marked, and then sanitized with alcohol. The physician will administer the Botox to these areas.

 

How long does the effects last?

Generally you will notice a difference within 1-3 days of receiving the botox as your muscles become more paralyzed. The effects of the botox can last between 3-6 months.

What are some pre-treatment instructions?

Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours before treatment, avoid anti-inflammatory medications (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, Motrin, Advil, Aleve) as these might cause more bruising, and schedule Botox at least 2 weeks prior to a special event.

What are some post treatment precautions?

Please do not do any vigorous exercise nor lie down for at least 4 hours. You may notice mild swelling to the areas injected. Besides that, you may go about your normal routine and may use makeup after 4 hours as well. Always be sure to contact your physician if you have any concerns.

The following groups of people should not receive Botox:

Pregnant or those trying to get pregnant, patient who are hypersensitive to ingredient in the formula or human albumin, people with neurologic diseases such as ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease), Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert Eaton disorder, Multiple sclerosis, and Parkinsons, and those with fever, flu or cold symptoms.

What are some possible side effects or complications?

Eyebrow and eyelid ptosis- in some cases if the botox is injected too close to the brow you may get drooping eyelids. This effect is usually temporary and usually resolves within days. Rarely does it last 3-4 months. Diplopia or double vision- this is rare, and may happen after injection too close to the lateral canthus. You may need to see an ophthalmologist after this. There may also be mild ecchymoses, which is a side effect associated with any type of injection. Lastly, there could be transient headaches, flu-like symptoms, discomfort, swelling or redness and rare bacterial infection. This is why this procedure should be done by experienced physician.
