Bleeding gums is often a sign of gum disease. As bacteria from dental plaque penetrate into the crevices between the teeth and gums, the gums become inflamed and bleed easily. Once beyond the reach of normal brushing and flossing, the bacteria will continue to progress and eventually penetrate other supportive tissue and bone. This condition, known as periodontitis or periodontal disease, can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
The progress of periodontal disease can often be arrested with non-surgical therapy if detected early. Following treatment, a strong home care regimen is recommended, along with return visits for dental cleanings at more frequent intervals of every 3-6 months.
