Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and Onlays are a longer lasting alternative to traditional fillings. They are made from porcelain or gold and bonded to the tooth. Since these materials are stronger than composite resin and bonded into place, they often last many years longer than traditional composite fillings. It is not uncommon for these restorations to last 20 to 30 years. An inlay is used when the tooth decay or damage is limited to the area between the cusp tips on the tooth. Alternatively, an onlay is needed if the cusp tip of a tooth is compromised and the biting surface of the tooth needs to be covered to preserve the structural integrity of the tooth.
